Welcome to Bad Fallingbostel!

The town as an united community

The City Bad Fallingbostel is a united community with the main town Bad Fallingbostel and the villages Dorfmark, Jettebruch, Mengebostel, Riepe and Vierde, which had been independant before the regional reorganisation in 1974.


History of the Town

Bad Fallingbostel and the villages are over a thousand years old, although documented mentioning occured only at later times. The main town Fallingbostel celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1993. Originally, this place had been only agricultural settlemnts because for many centuries farming had been the basis of life for the "altsächsische Loingaus".

In the year 993 Fallingbostel was mentioned in writng for the first time. Kaiser Otto III. set the border between the bishoprics Hildesheim and Minden. In this document Fallingbostel is referred to as "Vastulingeburstalle". This name means "place to live of Vastulo or of the Vastulingers".

Dorfmark was first mentioned in documents which are dated to the time around 968. In one of those documents from the year 1006 these place is called "Thormarca". That name is interpreted: Thor = to the, marca = border, forest-cooperative, market-cooperative.

Also the other villages are old settlements of the "altsächsischen Loingaus".


The city - old administrative headquaters

Bad Fallingbostel is the seat of the administration for about 700 years. Around 1300 the "Großvogtei" of Celle established twelve "Vogteien". One of them was the "Vogtei" Fallingbostel with headquarters in Fallingbostel. These "Vogteien" existed up to the 19th century. Not before April 1st, in 1885 they were closed down, after the kingdom Hanover, which Fallingbostel belonged to, had been annexed by Prussia in 1866. In the from now on province Hanover districts were formed, following the Prussian model. One those districts became the district Fallingbostel, which had its administration in Fallingbostel. Even when in 1977 the districts Fallingbostel and Soltau were combined the headquarters of the new district Sotau-Fallingbostel stayed in Fallingbostel.


The town and the Sparkasse

Bad Fallingbostel has not only been administrative headquarters of central importance for centuries, but also a place of economic development. Already 1838 the assessor of the "Vogtei" Fallingbostel, the later "Oberamtmann" Heinrich Guichard von Quintus-Icilius, founded the Sparkasse of Fallingbostel. It was one of the first rural savings banks in the kingdom Hanover.


The Municipality Rights

Fallingbostel received on April1st, 1949 the Municipality Rights. Dorfmark should also had been Municipality Rights from 1378 to 1388


The Location of the Municipal Area

The town Bad Fallingbostel is about in the middle of the district Soltau-Fallingbostel. It belongs to the southern part of the "Lüneburger Heide" at the edge of the "Hohen Heidmark". Extensive Forests, farmlands and meadows mark the landscape, that obtains a special charm from the heath river "Böhme". With the flat-hilly landscape and the many facillities the area has large recreational assets.

Sponsorships and Partnerships of the City Bad Fallingbostel

To the "Heimatvertriebenen aus Rummelsburg" (Pommern) Bad Fallingbostel keeps up a sponsoring relationship. In the year 2000, Fallingbostel got involved in an official partnership with the Polish town Miatsko (formerly known as Rummelsburg). Since 1989 there is an official town partnership with the French town Periers. There also is a sponsorship for the "Panzeraufklärungskompanie 400", stationed in Lüneburg and for the "1. Batterie des Panzerartillerie Lehrbataillons 95" in Munster, as well as a partnership with the 2 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), stationed in the neighboring Oerbke.
